Matty Healy’s latest Glastonbury performance has Swifties taling and not exactly in a good way.

The 1975 frontman seemingly took a jab at his ex, Taylor Swift, with some pointed “poet” references and a Peter Pan pin, reigniting fan debates over their past and sparking fresh conversations across social media.

During his June 27 set, Healy confidently declared himself “the best songwriter of my generation” and “a poet,” phrases that many swifties connected directly to Swift's 2024 album The Tortured Poets Department.

"I just want to remind you [for] the next couple of minutes," said Healy under the spotlight. "These lyrics, this poetry I bleed for you," he added.

Many Swifties believe The Tortured Poets Department was heavily inspired by Swift’s whirlwind romance with Healy.  The two dated briefly in the spring of 2023. Their romance reportedly began around early May 2023 and ended by early June 2023 – lasting about a month. Despite its short duration, the relationship received intense media and fan attention, especially given its timing shortly after Taylor’s split from longtime partner Joe Alwyn.

From lyrics referencing typewriters and tattooed golden retrievers to emotional tracks like “The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived” and “Peter,” fans have drawn clear connections to the 1975 frontman. While Taylor has never confirmed the muse behind the songs, the themes of chaotic passion, emotional confusion, and fleeting love align closely with what fans witnessed during their brief but headline-making relationship.

“Not even the best songwriter in the field. *Alexa, play 'The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived,'" one fan wrote on X, reffering to a track on Swift's latest album. "Another added, “That Peter Pan pin? Taylor called him that in her song ‘Peter.’ This is 100% a nod.”

But while some see it as clever wordplay, many fans view Healy's gestures as petty digs, especially now that he’s engaged to Gabbriette Bechtel.

“It feels like he’s stirring the pot just to stay relevant,” said longtime Swift fan.

Many fans were quick to point out that Healy knows exactly how to tap into Swift’s massive and devoted fanbase. He’s well aware of the media power the Swiftie fandom holds, and these subtle nods – whether intentional or not – seem designed to keep his name in the headlines.

While the tactic is certainly generating buzz, most agree it comes off as calculated and petty, and it’s unlikely to win over a fanbase that’s already drawn their line in the sand.

Matty himself hinted at this awareness in a 2023 interview on the Doomscroll podcast, where he said, “A lot of artists become very interested in their lore... but I think that’s an obvious thing to draw from. I’m just not interested in it.” Yet his recent Glastonbury performance suggests otherwise.

It seems Healy is playing the long game, making sure his name stays in the conversation – whether Swifties like it or not. And with a fandom as passionate as Swift's, that’s no small feat.
